Tibetan refugees shot
Kathmandu, October 8: Chinese border security guard shot two Tibetans and arrested 37, who were preparing to sneak into Nepal.
According to a report from the Tibetan Refugee Center, about 77 Tibetan refugees including children, women, and monks were trying to enter Nepal on October 6, from Nangpa La pass near Mt. Everest, which links northern Nepal with Chinese-controlled Tibet.
An official of the Center, Lhondup Dorjee said, "At least two Tibetans were killed, several were injured and 37 were arrested by the Chinese security personnel who opened fire.
A mountaineering web site of Nepal posted an immediate account about the shooting. Quoting a mountaineer heading for Cho Oyu, the website said, "Without warning, shooting started in a glance. After that, the Tibetans informed about their plan to flee and showed their guns to Chinese security guards."
However, neither China nor Nepal has released any official comment about the case. Every year over 2,500 Tibetan people reach India taking the shortest way through Nepal, despite tight security on the border of Nepal and Tibet.
In May 2003, 18 Tibetans who were trying to enter in Nepal were deported by force to China by the then government, breaking the policy of handling refugees over to the UN authorities. The UNHCR, the US and the EU strongly condemned the Nepalese government for the act. Bhutan News Service
