History in Dzongkha: is it needed?
Thimphu, January 15: In the middle of the continued debate and many teachers expressing unwillingness to teach history in Dzongkha, a national conference has authorized the only university in the country to conduct a study on its impact.
The 11th annual education conference, which was attended by District Education Officers, chiefs of various schools and education experts, has asked the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) to conduct a research on impact of history teaching in Dzongkha.
The research studies will be concluded within this June and a decision would be taken by next academic year whether to continue the subject.
However, the conference concluded that the national language should be included as a stream in higher secondary level as well.
Among other decisions that the conference took are ending punishments in schools, drafting comprehensive policy on school safety and guidelines on promoting cultural education in schools to be presented in the next conference, and decentralizing the procurement of stationeries, sports items, library books and science equipments to District.
