Government moves to increase unemployment (Economy)
Thimphu, September 22: The annual reports of the government cited increasing unemployment in the country and no additional opportunities for educated group, government started chopping off staffs from state agencies.
Druk Holding and Investment (DHI), created last year to streamline the state investments, directed its member companies to ward off their staffs to make them more economic.
The State Trading Corporation of Bhutan (STCB) bid good-bye to 27 of its 80 staffs, including its managing director Samdrup Thinley, as per DHI strategy to downsize public companies. More are likely to face the action.
The chopped off staffs included middle-aged managers and old timers – from the company’s joint managing director and general manager to assistant finance officer and several other managers.
STCB spends Nu 750,000 just on salaries, amounting to 55 percent of the company’s expenses, which also incurred Nu 41 million losses due to rampant corruption.
The other target of the DHI is likely to be Bhutan Board Particle Ltd. (BBPL) where government plans to throw away Bhutanese from the job to replace them by Indians making them shareholders of the company. Bhutan News Service
