Exiled Bhutanese not allowed moving before polls

Kakarvitta, March 19: India has sought assurance from Nepal government that the exiled Bhutanese will not be allowed to cross the border on or before the National Assembly elections are held in Bhutan.

In return Nepal has assured that it would not allow them trying to sneak back into their birthplace in Bhutan.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Indian and Nepalese authorities for a border management in Darjeeling recently.

"They have assured us that they will not allow the Bhutanese refugees to cross the border and will assist the Indian enforcement agencies to take care of the law and order,” Indian media quoted Rajesh Pandey, District Magistrate, Darjeeling as saying.

The authorities at the meeting agreed to work at maintaining law and order in the border areas as the exiled Bhutanese are demanding the right to return to their birthplace to vote.

Ironically, claiming itself the largest democracy, India denies the democratic rights of Bhutanese citizens to cast vote in the upcoming elections. Bhutan News Service
