ECB accelerates election preparedness

Published on Oct 07 2007 // Main News

Thimpnu, October 07: The Chief Election Commissioner Dasho Kunzang Wangdi briefed the 52 National Council candidates at the banquet hall in Thimphu.

He came critically over some candidates who are fresh university graduates questioning their ability to work in the parliament without having experiences on governance or understanding of the needs of the people.

However, he also expressed hope that new graduates would do their best to serve the nation if elected.

Young candidates vowed to make best use of their university knowledge to prove youths are equally competent and capable to rule the country.

For a whole day, the election commission officials briefed the new politicians on issues ranging from roles and responsibilities of the National Council and the election nomination procedure, filing of nominations, election campaign fund, advertising and publicity during the campaign, candidate’s code of conduct, roles of election officials and representatives and postal ballot.

The ECB has also published a list of dos and don’ts for the party during their familiarization visits to villages. Similar codes are also designed for the civil society. It also warned that the parties are not allowed to form its sister organizations. This warning has come amidst the speculation that the two major parties Druk Phuensum Tshogpa and People’s Democratic Party were on preparation for formation of women wings.  Bhutan News Service
