California supports Bhutan golfers
California, September 18: The Shivas Irons Society in California has donated US$5,000 cash to the Bhutan Youth Golf Association (BYGA) and its members are also behind a major effort to collect golf equipment and clothing for use by aspiring young golfers.
According to golfbhutan.com, fundraising for the BYGA is handled through the Friends of the Bhutan Youth Golf Association, non-profit organization based in New York.
Rick Lipsey, founder of the Bhutan Youth Golf Association expressed appreciation and thanks to the Society for their tangible support.
Created in 2002, BYGA aims to share golf with the youth of Bhutan and, through the game, to teach Bhutan's children to express friendship, honesty, integrity, morality and self-motivation.
President of the Shivas Irons Society Steve Cohen remarked the exchange as a real win-win for both organizations adding that his society also fulfils its mission to promote accessibility and education through golf while supporting the Bhutanese golfers.
The society had sent its one of the members Luke Brosterhous to Bhutan in 2006 who spent five months teaching the sports to BYGA members.
Early this year he hosted 16 members of the Society on a nine-day tour that included numerous rounds of golf on the country's only public course in Thimpu. Bhutan News Service
