WFP cuts food aid

Thimphu, February 05: The World Food Programme (WFP) will stop its food assistance to Bhutanese students studying in classes XI and XII in 19 schools from next year.

According to WFP staffers, the assistance will be diverted to needy people and the schools will be supported by the government.

According to WFP’s programme officer, Naoe Yakiya, the common issues of the WFP in Bhutan was the access to the remote schools, monsoon, natural disasters, inadequate facilities and the situation of the informal boarders who lived in shacks.

“We would provide food and construct hostels,” she said.

WFP spends about Nu.3 to Nu.3.5 million annually on food, non-food items and administrative support in Bhutan. Bhutan News Service
