WB assures security to Bhutanese students
Kalimpong, September 27: Government of West Bengal state in India has assured to provide security to the Bhutanese students in case of disturbances in the states.
During the 18th Border Coordination meeting that ended Friday in Kalimpong, the Bhutanese delegation raised the recent incident in Darjeeling where Bhutanese students suffered due to members of Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha attacking a resident building.
The district magistrate of Darjeeling said that Bhutanese students would be protected from any violence in Sikkim, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
The governments of Bhutan and state of West Bengal, India reached an understanding for construction of a double-door gate at Phuentsholing – one for entry and the other for exit to ease vehicular movement.
The meeting concluded to form a committee to work on the plan. According to new plan, the current border gate could be shifted to a new location possibly near the State Trading Corporation office in lower Phuentsholing.
Issue of possible disruption of centenary and coronation celebrations in Bhutan by insurgents was also widely discussed and agreed to work closely to check all such activities in the region.
Similar agreement was reached during the border security meeting with Assam government recently.
Bhutan’s consul in Kolkata, Tshering Wangda led the Bhutanese delegation to the meeting. Bhutan News Service
