Security post to be resumed in camps

Published on May 23 2007 // Main News

Kathmandu, May 24: The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said that there is a need to re-establish security posts in camps in Jhapa and Morang districts of Nepal where exiled Bhutanese have been living.

Speaking at a press meet in Kathmandu on Wednesday evening, Guterres said security situation should be strengthened. Security posts were shifted from the camps viewing the escalating security situation in Nepal.

Guterres said voluntary repatriation is the 'desirable solution' for the crisis. He said as positive views were coming from India, UNHCR hopes for constructive attitude from Nepal, India and Bhutan on this issue.

In response to reports that Bhutan government may be planning to evict additional 80,000 Nepali-speaking citizens, Guterres said 'there would not be such a tragedy'.

Geterres had held meetings with the officers of India's foreign ministry some months back to get support from India.

Replying to the questions by media persons, he said UNHCR has not urged Bhutan for the establishment of its office in Thimphu.

He will travel to Thimphu today. He said he expects positive response from the Bhutanese authorities to allow the exiled Bhutanese return to their home. Bhutan News Service
