Parliamentarians stress right to education
Thimphu, May 20: Parliamentarians have stressed to add right to education for all Bhutanese children in the draft constitution.
During the discussion over the draft constitution in the ongoing parliament session, the parliamentarians have raised suspicion over the guarantee of education to all children.
Most of the schools in southern Bhutan remain closed for the last two decades forcing a large number of children out of schools.
The government has recently decided to re-open the schools in these districts.
The parliamentarians mulled over adding more clauses under Article 16 of the draft constitution. Chairman of the constitution drafting committee chief justice Sonam Tobgye said free education is must for all children under certain age and such age must be stated in the constitution.
Education minister Thakur Singh Powdyal said government is in favor free education for all Bhutanese children. Bhutan News Service
