Family Ties

“Throughout my reign I will never rule you as a King. I will protect you as a parent, care for you as a brother and serve you as a son …” so pledged His Majesty the King during the coronation two and a half years ago.

His Majesty the King has kept his promise.

His Majesty has traveled the length and breadth of our country and personally granted land kidu to tens of thousands of farmers. He has walked – sometimes for days on end, in the sun, rain and in the snow – to meet our remotest villagers, and has cooked for them, slept in their houses, and granted kidu to the destitute, the needy and the infirm.

He has visited almost every school, from community schools to colleges, to talk with, to play – at times even barefoot – and to guide our students.

And when disaster has struck – earthquakes in our East, floods throughout the country, fire in many places – His Majesty the King has rushed to be with His people; to console them and to support them; and to help them rebuild their homes and their lives.

His Majesty has kept his promise – He has protected us as only a parent can; cared for us as a true brother; and served us as a devoted son. He is the People’s King.

The People’s King has already touched the lives of thousands upon tens of thousands of ordinary Bhutanese. And yesterday, when he announced that, “it is now time for me to marry” His Majesty touched the hearts of an entire nation.

The joyous announcement did not come as a Royal Command. Instead, His Majesty informed the nation personally, without formality and without any attempt to hide his complete sincerity, much like a son informing his parents and his siblings.

Our future queen is Ashi Jetsun Pema. And the royal wedding will take place this October.

The entire nation, like one big family, is already celebrating.

  1. We all know Jigme Singye is the virtual King yet. The present King is a mere puppet in his Dad’s hands. Can someone tell me how many times he has visited Southern Bhutan since he was declared the King ??? He has not said a word to bring southern Bhutanese in the main stream, ignoring the issue doen’t make him a good King. Well being of each and everyone of the Bhutanese should be in his heart, sincere effort to solve the problem should come from within his heart.

  3. Thick pair of lips to kiss at and equally thick pair of boots to kick…. Congratulations and Good Luck…… We shall respect more to engaged queen……

  4. This is funny. Have him make roads and he need not walk in so called sun, rain and wind. He would better subsidize government grant to the Northerners and use the amount to build the country’s infrastructure.

  5. bishnu will not see the king visiting southeren bhutan from jhapa and he will not even know any thing about bringing the southeren bhtan in the main stream just because he does not have such a king in jhapa.

  6. as to gain more popularity within his dynasty and his supporters…..but its meaning less.he is doing same as his father……..turn deaf ear and blind eye to easterners and southerns.

  7. tortola we dont need ur respect nor ur wishes…..we are more than enough for our king to be happy and content……:) and ya eric our king takes pleasure in walking in sun and rain with his beloved people….long live the kings and the queen…….peaceeeeeee

  8. Dear All,
“Majburi ko Nam Mahatma Gandhi”. As Eric said, “This is funny. Have him make roads and he need not walk in so called sun, rain and wind. He would better subsidize government grant to the Northerners and use the amount to build the country’s infrastructure”.
The world is going for “Peoples’ Participation”, ‘pluralism’, ‘inclusive democracy’, where are all these in your so called ‘democratic’ Bhutan. Ofcourse, if the present King is patriotic citizen of that country, he should not wait for a time when it would be too late for him and the country. He should initiate positively to find a durable and acceptable solution to the problem of South Bhutan. Certainly, a Kings role as a guardian and symbol of unity must not be limited to treking around the country side.

His marriage should be an awaited event for all the Bhutanese alike. Else, Bhutanese in old stone age thoughts and and a child-play games will suffer as a whole in near future.

  9. All bogus …. nonsense and irrational doings. If your king has earned western education he could have learnt something on humanity and mankind. He might be walking in sun because he could have been in his closed circuit palace for more than a year. Hey, it is not an extraordinary task he had performed. Also, write logical and universal truth. I dont think Mr Tobgey is a smart and independent because the way he has expressed his pointless points about his king. It is just a panygeric.

  10. I support beda. During his student life in Yangchenphu school, where he used to attend the school under heavy security guards, he only use to attend for the sake of attending. People should remember that the percentage of pass marks during his school final in Yangchenphug was based on the marks obtained by him. So, many poor in study children also got the chance to attend college. In the past it was something like 76% while his time, it dropped to 60% and following his departure the percentage again increased to higher rate. The education department and the examination had to make all those shifts to keep fitting to the palace desires. So, what people can expect from a king whose study was so poor. He is good to hunt down beautiful girls only. I am sorry I have to say so given the democratic rights by the throne of 2008.

  11. please delete “Royal Weeding” instead keep some valuable article. what can anyone learn from this fallacy? This title irritates hopefully almost all the Bhutanese brothers and sisters. please dont make it panic.

  12. All said and done, there is natural inclination of the Bhutanese people to their King for stability of governance and administration of justice in the nation. People’s view will change only when stability of governance and administration of justice in the nation falters, and if that was caused by the king.
We love our cherub like kings (with their communal politics apart). We wish our kings were wise to claim the lost part of Bhutan for enjoyment by us the Bhutanese people instead of dividing us on sensitive issues of language, culture, religion, traditions and customs etc. Even if we speak different languages, we speak the same thing for our beloved nation and our kings, uniting our strength for the national cause. Tashi delek.
