Bhutan seeks UNSC membership

October 01, 2010: Bhutan has expressed its willingness to be elected as the member of UN Security Council for the period 2013-14 term.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Bhutan sought support from member states for the seat of temporary member of the highest agency of UN system.

The statement came as foreign secretary Daw Penjo was speaking at the annual general debate of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly.

Penjore said, “After 39 years of membership, Bhutan continues to believe that the UN still has room and role for smaller states, as equal partners in global affairs, including the maintenance of international peace and security.”

He further said, “For this reason, Bhutan is seeking member for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC for the term 2013-14.”

He urged for equal opportunity for small states to participate in the work of the UN.

Besides five permanent members, UNSC elects 10 temporary members every two years.
