RALEIGH, N.C. — The tiny Buddhist country of Bhutan, known as the last Shangri-La, has become famous for its happy people.
Recently, Prime Minister Jigme Y. Thinley, who traveled to the United States this week to speak at Columbia University’s World Leaders Forum, told Al Jazeera that, “In Bhutan even the street dogs seem to be smiling.” Article 9 of Bhutan’s constitution puts it simply: “The State shall strive to promote those conditions that will enable the pursuit of Gross National Happiness.”
Now, the government is trying to turn bliss into a development strategy: Gross National Happiness, the thrust of which is to weave development around people, not the people around development.

This is a mind tempering game under the gullible whispering of the dragon. To make anything valuable, it has to be (made) rare. This is economic term/identification of the situation. Only the rare will attract the attention of spectators or the stake holders. The world is in need of it and lingers to have a glimpse of it. As such wise and far-sighted leaders proposed the term that is fast catching up as a powerful currency in the world market, although the author calls it joke! Alas, many are entertained by the weighty jesting of the Buddhist rulers of Bhutan that are capable of turning the pictures of sufferings into scenes of pleasures to the world drunken with pails of entertainments!
The Bhutan Peace and Prosperity Party won by name, not by any good deeds. Is it another joke? Bhutanese need and are able to consume all that others need and consume. We aspire as do the rest and wish those experienced, qualified speakers were able to fulfill their promises by which they inspire us to support them. The HOPE gives the energy and patience to bear pain till the time of attainment that we believe only Christ can fulfill. The elites enjoy GNH upfront in our name, by us and we continue to wait for GNH in the walk, not in mere talks.
