Dzongkha loses relevance

Thimphu, May 10: The general interest of the people towards learning Dzongkha has decreased as the importance of the English education has surpassed it on priority in finding job.

According to a survey recently carried out by the ministry of education, the relevance of the national language in the job market is nil.

The survey also revealed that as the students in the school level care least to leant Dzongkha, the university graduates even don't know how to write an application in Dzongkha language.

However, the government has been enforcing that people should any learn the language and all official activities be carried in Dzongkha.

The government had issued orders that all national seminars, workshops and public meetings should be carried out in Dzongkha and that press statements be prepared in the same language.

In contrast, all these are carried out in English. Dzongkha was declared a national language in 1969. Bhutan News Service
