TWMN urges Druk regime to allow BT's operation
Kathmandu, September 16: Bhutan Chapter of Third World Media Network (TWMN) has said its deep attention has been drawn towards blockage of a popular site i.e. bhutantimes in June from being viewed within the country.
Issuing a press statement on its first anniversary on Sunday, TWMN – Bhutan said the blockage of the site is a sheer attack on media sector. It has also urged Bhutanese government to allow its operation at the earliest.
Meanwhile, TWMN – Bhutan has declared an award 'Reporter of the Year' to Sangey Oendray, Bhutan-based correspondent of Bhutan News Service, for his selfless contribution towards independent media sectors.
"We also believe that unless Bhutanese regime guarantees media freedom in the country, it cannot step into complete democratization", reads the release.
TWMN – Bhutan has also welcomed the launching of SAFMA – Bhutan Chapter, in August 5, 2007, inside the country. "TWMN – Bhutan will be operating fully in accordance to the principles of ‘free press, without being haunted by the absolute Druk monarch", reads release, adding that it is equally concerned whether the august body like the SAFMA already accredited for its advocacy on behalf of press and media professionals, would be able to carryout its mission in this small country where media is strictly under government control.
TWMN – Bhutan has been working for the media freedom, freedom of speech and expression in Bhutan since its affiliation at the Dhaka-based headquarter in September 16, 2006. Bhutan News Service
