CD stamps for commemorative year

Thimphu, January 07: Bhutan introduced a set of two mini documentaries on CD-ROM as part of an actual postage stamp release developed by Creative Products International of Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

Most of the stamps reflect innovation to support economic development and to preserve Himalayan environment at the same time.

The CD stamps are the latest in a series of postage stamp that began in 1960s when Bhutan joined Universal Postal Union. The stamps are mini-CDs that fit into self-adhesive envelopes and when affixed to a larger envelop, the CD stamp can be used as postage.

Bhutan plans to accelerate its efforts for its environmental, cultural and economic sustainability with the sale of this computer-age stamp.

While bare-footed couriers still deliver the mail in many remote regions, Bhutan's postage stamps remain world-renowned in the philatelic community. Colorful, creative and collectible, Bhutan's stamps not only cause a sensation each time they were released, but more importantly were valued by Bhutan as its chief revenue producer.

In 1962, Bhutan released its first international postal stamps and began its postal program. The first series were developed by Burt Todd and now her daughter Frances Todd Stewart is important part of the stamp development in the country.

The new series of CD-stamps were for celebrating the commemorative year 2008 when the fifth king will coronate, nation celebrate the centenary of the monarchy and unveiling of the first constitution leading the country to a democratic framework. Bhutan News Service
