DNC welcomes the election results

New Delhi, March 25: The Druk National Congress led by Rongthong Kuenley Dorji has welcomed the results of the first ever general elections in Bhutan to elect people's representatives into the Lower House.

In a statement on Tuesday, the party said it has been opposing the machinations of the electoral process in that it is not inclusive and ‘free’, and thus not genuinely democratic.

But it has always supported holding of the elections in principle as it believes that this is the first step towards achieving this end, the party said, adding, Bhutanese people have voiced their opinion, even though the choice was slim.

DNC said DPT now has been given the responsibility by the people to work to protect their interests and the interest of the nation, has the responsibility of steering the kingdom towards a prosperous and peaceful future by not only ensuring equitable development and progress, but also importantly resolving all outstanding issues that could plague the nation in future.

“The Druk National Congress extends its best wishes to the DPT in its overwhelming electoral success. But also wants to bring to its notice that an overwhelming majority does not imply dominance of minority opinion. Democratic elections are not a fight for survival or power to rule, but a competition to serve the people,” Dorji said.

The DNC has also assured the DPT of its support in all its endeavors to serve the Bhutanese people. Bhutan News Service
